Since 2005 I play correspondence chess at Remoteschach, BdF, ICCF and IECG. Compared to "real life" chess - which I play since 1979 and still like - you need a totally different approach.
- You may play every opening you ever wanted to try
- Simple opening traps or unusual openings won't help you that much - on the other side they don't hurt that much when faced with
- If you play with the help of computer programs (most CC'er do), you need to know their strenghts and weaknesses
- More than somewhere else you need an applicable game plan, just calculating a few moves won't help in most cases
Though there is the prevailing opinion, that correspondence chess nowadays (in the area of Fritz, Shredder and Rybka) is boring and will produce endless draws, the reality shows the opposite. Just starting the analysis mode over night and playing the suggested move won't help you that much. In fact relying on bots too much will lead to a disadvantage very often. I myself made this awkward experience when I was too busy and just switched on the "Rechenknecht".
Below you'll find some decided games played by me which lasted less than 30 moves.
Some other pearls will follow (the analysis will last a bit longer).
